Visualising the Water-Babies

The Water-Babies by Charles Kingsley was published in 1863 as a Victorian fairy tale. But at a deeper level it addresses the clash between Darwin's evolutionary theories and the teachings of the Christian church. It also provides lessons for the young in ethics, philosophy, natural history and in the science of classification.

The first edition had just two plates by Noel Paton and it was not till 1885 that a fully illustrated edition of the book was published using 100 illustrations by Linley Sambourne.

This publication sets illustrations by Sambourne and Heath Robinson alongside the prettier and more romantic drawings made by Margaret Tarrant and Helen Jacobs. The work of Harold Jones is represented by copies of the book and its wonderful dust-wrapper design.
