Neo-Romantic Book Illustration

After WW2 a new spirit of romanticism suffused English book illustration, as people reacted against the gloom of blackout and rationing.

A number of young artists focused on the depiction of human emotions and of dramatic scenes, prioritising content over form, and were part of a movement known as Neo-Romanticism.

The key artists of the movement include John Minton, Keith Vaughan, John Piper, Michael Ayrton, Edward Bawden and Henry Moore, all of whom are represented here.
